BOOK FESTIVAL 2023

 Become an architectural angel 

Contemporary architecture still suffers from limited public exposure. To remedy this, Booklaunch is inaugurating two new national initiatives:

 

  1. An annual Architectural Book Festival

  2. An annual Architectural Book Award

 

Both events are planned for next June, while the London Festival of Architecture is running. 

 

The Book Festival is planned to run for three days and will provide opportunities for leading writers on architecture to give talks and to do author signings. 

​

There will also be panel discussions about the logistics of architectural publishing, with advisory sessions to help architects get their work into print.

 

A pop-up shop will run during the festival, at which important and attractive architecture-related books will be put on show and made available for sale, and where publishers will be able to mount displays of their own.

 

Tickets for the events will go on sale at the start of 2023, with flexible pricing for all-day participation and individual events.

The Book Awards will open for submissions later this autumn, with the winners announced at a gala dinner on the last night of the festival.

​

Our aim is that both the literary festival and the awards will cover their costs, but before we enter into any contractual relationships, we need to be sure that our organisational expenses are covered.

 WHAT WE WOULD LIKE FROM YOU 

 

We are inviting members of the architectural community, and friends in related industries, to help guarantee our costs. We are not necessarily looking for financial gifts (unless you wish to sponsor some element of the programme as a Patron); what we mostly want are loan guarantees that will allow us to contract with the various providers whose services need paying for.

 

We are asking for loans in multiples of £5,000, £10,000 and £15,000. For every promise of backing, the architects’ livery company will put up matching funds, meaning that everything you offer will immediately be doubled, helping us reach our target quickly.

 

Because this is a new enterprise, we cannot yet predict what the financial outcome will be, but all costs will be vetted and no moneys will be expended recklessly. Surpluses will be repaid.

 

The programme is being led by Dr Stephen Games, formerly architecture correspondent of the Guardian, deputy editor of the RIBA Journal, BBC documentary maker and British Press Award winner, and currently the Publisher of Booklaunch, the UK’s biggest books magazine.

All financial assistance will be recognised in the programme’s publicity material, and help will be given to promote sponsors whenever possible during the festival. We are also reserving special privileges for benefactors.

​

In addition, we invite participation from people who can develop and run the festival website, generate interest from traditional and social media, and sell tickets. Help in these departments will also be marked in our publicity.
